Reflection of Surah al-Anfal and Surah al-Tawbah

Innalhamda lillahee, nahmaduhu wa nasta'eenuhu wa nastaghfiruhu, wa na'oodhu billaahi min shuroori anfusinaa wa min sayyiaati a'maalinaa. Mainyah dihillaahu falaa mudillilahu, wa mainyudlil falaa haadiya lah.

"Alhumdulillah. Indeed, all praise is due to Allah. We praise Him and seek His Help and forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from our souls' evils and our wrong doings. He whom Allah guides, no one can misguide; and he whom He misguides, no one can guide."

Wa ashhadu anlaa ilaaha illalaahu, wahdahu laashareeka lahu, wa ash hadu anna muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasooluh

"I bear witness that there is no god except Allah- alone without any partners. And I bear witness that Muhammad is His 'and (servant) and Messenger.

They ask you, [O Muhammed], about the bounties [of war]. Say, "The [decision concerning] bounties is for Allāh and the Messenger." So fear Allāh and amend that which is between you and obey Allāh and His Messenger, if you should be believers (1) The believers are only those who, when Allāh is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely (2) The ones who establish prayer, and from what We have provided them, they spend (3) Those are the believers, truly. For them are degrees [of high position] with their Lord and forgiveness and noble provision(4)

The qualities required in a true believer and our ultimate goal is continuously forgotten every single day.

What do we pursue first in our life whether be it for studies or other aspects; Dunya or Akhira? What are the Sahaba told when they asked about the booty, which was Halal for them? They are told first make yourselves a good candidate for the blessing. We should take a lesson from this Ayah. Before seeking the pleasure of this Dunya, in the Sahabah’s case the war booty, we should attain Taqwa, mend and maintain our relationship between others, and follow the commands given by Allah and his Rasool (SAWS).

Moreover, we are told to be believers, actual believers. One of the qualities of a real believer is that upon hearing the recitation of the Ayat of the Qur’an their hearts tremble with fear and eyes overflow with tears upon hearing about the consequence of the deeds and the severity of the punishment. When was the last time we trembled upon hearing the Ayat of Allah? Did the fear sent a shiver down our spine (back)?

Another quality mentioned about the believer is that they trust upon Allah. At some point in our lives, we have all had our trust betrayed. There exist few of us who trust anyone completely. The same goes for principles or philosophies. We have trusted them, only to be disappointed. Maybe that is why it is so hard for us to let go of ourselves and truly trust Allah. This is a sad fact. Even though we know that Allah is our Lord and Protector, we have a hard time letting go and allowing ourselves to trust that He will protect us. Let the Ayah in Surah Ale- Imran be a reminder, “If Allāh should aid you, no one can overcome you; but if He should forsake you, who is there that can aid you after Him? And upon Allāh let the believers rely” (Ale-Imran: 160). We have been told that what is for us can't miss us and what is not for us can't hit us.

We have to learn to trust that Allah will take care of us when we obey Him and that He wills withdrawal of His Great Mercy when we disobey him. Every morning the bird goes out to seek the provision Allah has given it, and every night it comes home with it. Allah has promised us our provision. Trusting in Allah means that when we hear a command, we obey it. We recognize that we are limited and that Allah has no limits. He knows what we do not know. We do not try to explain away the commands of Allah by saying that it is for another time or another people. We do not say that what Allah has commanded for us is oppressive. We accept and obey. This is faith and trust. The reward for trusting in Allah is paradise. There is sin in distrusting Him. We need to stop relying on our desires, our minds, and our version of logic and realize that Allah is the one who knows while we know not. Allah is the Wise, and His judgments are wise by default. Allah is the Just and His verdicts are Just by default. We cannot see everything in every issue as Allah can, so why do we insist on believing that our minds can be trusted before or instead of Allah (who is always all knowing and always all wise)?

Moreover, Allah mentions another good trait of a true believer. They fulfill and implement the obligations they are commanded to do, such as praying Salah and giving Zakat. The foundation and difference between believer and disbeliever is Salah and Zakat as mentioned in Surah Tawbah, “But if they repent, establish prayer, and give zakāh, then they are your brothers in religion."(Tawbah: 11). Another ayah from the same Surah further shows the characteristics of a believer. “The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and establish prayer and give zakāh and obey Allāh and His Messenger. Those – Allāh will have mercy upon them." (Tawbah: 71)

Salah strengthens the foundations of our faith. It prepares a person to live the life of goodness and in obedience to Allah (SWT), and it builds courage and determination. The Salah performed five times a day eradicates that forgetfulness and heedlessness, and keeps the believer's will and awareness alive. It ensures that the believer constantly turns to Allah and assists him in living in the light of His commandments. The believer who stands in the presence of Allah in order to pray establishes a powerful spiritual bond with Him. The Ayah from Surah Al Ankabut, says that Salah reminds people of Allah and keeps them from all forms of evil. “Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allāh is greater. And Allāh knows that which you do” (Al-'Ankabut: 45). Remember, the last thing that Prophet Mohammad (SAWS) emphasized at his deathbed was Salah. He also said the first thing we will have to answer about on the Day of judgment is also Salah.

With the obligation of Zakah, we are told to forgo the one thing that is dear to our hearts…money. Wealth can either bring accomplishment or achievement for us in this Dunya or Akhira. But by giving Zakat it can be an achievement for both the worlds. Zakat in itself means purity and cleanliness. Zakat is given on set portion from the wealth for the needy and the poor. The criteria for distribution of Zakat is mentioned in Surah al-Tawbah, “Zakāh expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakāh] and for bringing hearts together [for Islām] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allāh and for the [stranded] traveler – an obligation [imposed] by Allāh. And Allāh is Knowing and Wise” (al-Tawbah: 60). By giving Zakat a man's wealth and along with it his own self becomes purified. The wealth of that person is impure, if he does not take out from the God-given wealth what is due to the poor and the needy. And along with his wealth his Nafs too is impure because it is filled with ungratefulness. His heart is so narrow, he is selfish and such a worshipper of wealth that it pains him to render what is due in return for the Divine favor of bestowing on him wealth in excess of his real requirements. Can it be expected from such a person that he will ever do any good deed to please Allah and will make any sacrifice for the sake of his religion and faith? This is why the heart of such a person is impure as also his wealth which he amasses in this manner. Therefore, to cleanse ones heart Allah has prescribed Zakat.

Hence, a true believer takes care of the Haqq that needs to be fulfilled. He fulfills the Haqq to Allah (SWT), when hearing the Ayat (verses) of Allah he ponders, reflects, accepts and implements. His heart also trembles with the fear of Allah, his punishment, upon realizing Allah’s might, upon realizing the mercy and graciousness of Allah, and upon knowing the wonderful bliss Allah has kept for the believers… Jannathul Firthous. A believer also fulfills the Haqq of the Rasool (SAWS) by following his Sunnah with no deviation or innovation. A true believer further fulfills the Haqq to himself by doing the obligation and saving himself from the eternal suffering of Hell fire. A believer further more fulfills the Haqq to people, by establishing good relationship and giving charity to ensure the wellbeing of others. For these true believers who give up themselves and their wealth for Allah, He promises them in Surah al-Tawbah with good news,

“Indeed, Allāh has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties [in exchange] for that they will have Paradise. They fight in the cause of Allāh, so they kill and are killed. [It is] a true promise [binding] upon Him in the Torah and the Gospel and the Qur’ān. And who is truer to his covenant than Allāh? So rejoice in your transaction which you have contracted. And it is that which is the great attainment” (Tawbah: 111)

The barter and promise made by Allah is Jannah… the ultimate Darussalam. Verily this is the greatest success one can receive.

May Allah (SWT) give us the Tawfeek and Hidaya to avail this promise and grant us the ultimate success of Akhira, Jannah… Ameen Ya Rabb.

Subhanakallahumma wa bihamdika, ash hadu anlaa ilaaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atoobu ilaik.

"How perfect You are O Allaah, and I praise You. I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance"

Surah Baqarah Verse 261

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allāh is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allāh multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allāh is all-Encompassing and Knowing.

I learnt that Allah SWT is "Waasiun Aleem"- All-Encompassing and Knowing

I was cleaning up yesterday and was really really tired and was drowning in self-pity, thinking who will help me? I have to clean and wash the windows and window nets myself, even If I Am dying. And then I made dua "Oh Allah, help me, make it easy for me". And today I woke up to a thunderstorm and just now saw that all my windows and window nets are sparkling clean! SUBHANALLAH! My Allah helped me, who is “Wasiun Aleem”. All-Encompassing and Knowing “

So we just need to ask Allah, and He listens. Glory be to my Lord!

Surah Baqarah Verse 255

Allāh – there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursī extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

The other night I was reciting ayat-ul-kursi for my daughter’s protection and Allah swt opened the doors of understanding for me. Since my daughter was born the Doctors are doing so many genetic tests but have not been able to evaluate which chromosome out of 46 has a minor deletion… if there is any deletion. They are not able to diagnose yet and they cannot tell how her future turnout to be either , if she will grow out of these delays or she will have other developmental problems in future. I was thinking... How could they tell?

Allah swt says in Ayat-ul-Kursi “Ya`lamu Mā Bayna 'Aydīhim Wa Mā Khalfahum” He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them

“Wa Lā Yuĥīţūna Bishay'in Min `Ilmihi 'Illā Bimā Shā'a” “and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills”

My daughter (Aavisa) is not like this because something went wrong but she is like this because Allah swt destined her to be like this. So there is no point to regret rather it’s time to seek forgiveness and be thankful because it could have been worse. If this is Allah swt’s izn (permission) then I’m grateful ‘Allhamdulillah ala Kulli Haal”(Praise be to Allah in all conditions) May Allah SWT give me the tawfeeq (ability) to earn maximum deeds out of this opportunity and bless her with health. Ameen

Now I understand why we read ayat-ul-kursi for protection because most exalted and most supreme is guarding us. Is there any one blessed then us? Alhumdulillah, Alhumdulillah, Allhamdulillahi ala kuli haal (Praise be to Allah in all conditions)

And when you divorce women and they have [nearly] fulfilled their term, either retain them according to acceptable terms or release them according to acceptable terms, and do not keep them, intending harm, to transgress [against them]. And whoever does that has certainly wronged himself. And do not take the verses ofAllāh in jest. And remember the favor of Allāhupon you and what has been revealed to you of the Book and wisdom by which He instructs you. And fear Allāh and know that Allāh is Knowing of all things.

Allah tells us that the Quran and the sunnah are blessings. But do we treat them like blessings? Or do we skim the translation, copy/paste a hadith, and feel as if we have accomplished a big thing? When we think of blessings, we think of cars, homes, families, ipods, etc. Don't we cherish these things? These temporary things? Why, then, do we not cherish the words of our Master? The words of our CREATOR? The feeling of learning each individual word of the Quran is indescribable. Until we do this, how can we expect to cherish this wonderful blessing Allah has given us?

Surah Baqarah Verses 228-232

Divorced women remain in waiting for three periods, and it is not lawful for them to conceal what Allāh has created in their wombs if they believe in Allāh and the Last Day. And their husbands have more right to take them back in this [period] if they want reconciliation. And due to the wives is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable. But the men have a degree over them [in responsibility and authority]. And Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise.

Divorce is twice. Then, either keep [her] in an acceptable manner or release [her] with good treatment. And it is not lawful for you to take anything of what you have given them unless both fear that they will not be able to keep [within] the limits of Allāh. But if you fear that they will not keep [within] the limits of Allāh, then there is no blame upon either of them concerning that by which she ransoms herself. These are the limits of Allāh, so do not transgress them. And whoever transgresses the limits of Allāh – it is those who are the wrongdoers.

And if he has divorced her [for the third time], then she is not lawful to him afterward until [after] she marries a husband other than him. And if the latter husband divorces her [or dies], there is no blame upon the woman and her former husband for returning to each other if they think that they can keep [within] the limits of Allāh. These are the limits of Allāh, which He makes clear to a people who know.

And when you divorce women and they have fulfilled their term, do not prevent them from remarrying their [former] husbands if they agree among themselves on an acceptable basis. That is instructed to whoever of you believes in Allāhand the Last Day. That is better for you and purer, and Allāh knows and you know not.

As I was taking notes and listening to Sr. Taymiyyah expand on these verses, I recalled the several stories of divorce in my community. Divorce rates are as high as 50% - one Imam of a Masjid in my city said in a Khutbah: "For every marriage contract I witness, I also witness a marriage end in divorce." Every time I hear about a Muslim brother and sister's marriage break up, my heart aches. After learning about these verses, I have a better understanding of why divorce rates have become so high in our community (and unfortunately, in some cases, divorce brings out the worst of the person, and much Gheeba and nameema is done by one side or both). When we learn the roles of the husband and the wife, and how they should treat each other, we see that we have strayed from our roles. Sisters' priorities have changed - this society has affected us and our mentalities have become influenced by the so-called "feminist" movement in the West. True feminism (in the true sense) is embodied in the teachings of Islam. However, instead of realizing this, sisters have assumed a different role in marriage, one which "competes" with the husband's. The understanding of equality does not mean that the husband and wife's actions must be EQUAL! Equality is a balance that puts into consideration the INHERIT differences between man and woman (the differences our sisters today think they make them "weaker" in the eyes of society, while in fact, maker her stronger, freer, and more respected because of them). I will end my thought with this: when a brother or sister get into an argument (which is natural in ANY marriage) - often brothers (or sisters even), let their ego be the decision maker, while ISLAM should be the decision maker. If the husband and wife put ISLAM as the authority in decision making, there would be much less conflict and disagreement in most issues that arise. When Allah is your focus and you HUMBLE yourself to Him, your marriage will also be in focus, and will be much more tranquil, the bond will be stronger, and your vision for your life together will become much clearer. May Allah (swt) grant all my sisters and brothers in Islam righteous spouses, and may those who are already married, put Allah first in all their affairs, Ameen

Surah Baqarah Verse 224

And do not make [your oath by] Allāh an excuse against being righteous and fearing Allāhand making peace among people. And Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.

When I read this ayah, the word "tuslihu" i.e., you all make peace, makes me stop and ponder for a while. Whenever I thought about good deeds, making peace between people never made the list. I never realized what a beautiful act this is. I regret the times when upon seeing people upset with each other I acted indifferent, always told myself not my problem. Just imagine how many problems that face our community and our daily lives would go away if we just followed this simple command

Surah Baqarah Verse 223

Your wives are a place of sowing of seed for you, so come to your place of cultivation however you wish and put forth [righteousness] for yourselves. And fear Allāh and know that you will meet Him. And give good tidings to the believers.

I was pondering over this part of this glorious verse Your wives are a place of sowing of seed for you and it made me realize yet again the glory and honor Allah swt bestows on Women! , it made me feel so special and proud to be a Muslim Woman. However, sadly this has been one of the many verses of the Quran that have been misquoted and misunderstood. The solution being "read the Quran with an open mind and you will realize it is the ONLY solution for the problems of mankind"

The word that is used for women is "Harth"- field and not "Hadeeqah" which is a "garden" ,or any other similar word. Interestingly the word "hadeeqah"- is used for such a garden that has walls surrounding it, enclosed garden, a private, enclosed garden; such a garden that is luscious, has a lot of greenery, beautiful and colorful, garden that is fully watered. Such a garden is very "pleasurable" to look at, but the word that has been used here is "Harth"- a field, crop, cultivation- which is not only pleasurable But yields benefit, which needs to be fostered, taken care of ,nurtured. Similarly a wife is not merely an object to satiate ones 'pleasure' but she needs to be loved, taken care of, fostered. This word "Harth" really amazed me it shows the Love and care that Allah swt commands the husband to give to his wife. This verse is telling the men the importance of taking care of their wives- it is a beautiful metaphor telling the men how precious their wives are and that they should take care of her just like the farmer is with his land! And then the fruit that comes forth from this precious land is 'Pious offspring"

Land is the most valuable asset of this world. Innumerable battles have been fought for land. Real estate is of prime importance. In court Over 90% of the litigation is about Land disputes, family vendettas, feuds are mostly about Land. Land is something that generally men Love to acquire, the best real estate you own determines your position in society.

Allah swt in His infinite mercy has compared women to the most valuable asset in this world!

A good land lord is one who takes care of his land, cherishes his land, who protects it, who cultivates it,. Allah swt is telling the Muslim men to cherish their wives and not to abuse them, to encourage the potential within them to develop their talents. A bad land lord is one who neglects his land. Allah swt is commanding the Muslim man : Be good landlords, treat your prized possession with utmost love and care, so that you will yield the best produce- righteous offspring!

Surah Baqarah Verses 221 and 222

And do not marry polytheistic women until they believe. And a believing slave woman is better than a polytheist, even though she might please you. And do not marry polytheistic men [to your women] until they believe. And a believing slave is better than a polytheist, even though he might please you. Those invite [you] to the Fire, butAllāh invites to Paradise and to forgiveness, by His permission. And He makes clear His verses to the people that perhaps they may remember.

And they ask you about menstruation. Say, "It is harm, so keep away from wives during menstruation. And do not approach them until they are pure. And when they have purified themselves, then come to them from whereAllāh has ordained for you. Indeed, Allāh loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves."

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, “A woman may be married for four qualities,

for her property, her rank, her beauty, and her religion; so get the religious one and

prosper.” Agreed upon.

The person who places much emphasis on the first three is clearly more concerned with the dunya and only a believer whose focus is the hereafter would consider a woman, whilst placing much emphasis on her deen b/c he is aware that this is the type of woman who will be a guide and support for him in attaining Allah's (swt) pleasure. Sometimes we just want the best of the best, but only in this world. We claim to have faith in Allah SWT and in the heavens and the hellfire, but then why do we cut ourselves short of goodness? Why do we strive with the utmost effort in getting the best in this world, when surely we can strive to have the best in the hereafter. With regards to marriage, perhaps our focus is limited and it is difficult to look deep and beyond this world. Perhaps it is human nature to want immediate gain and satisfaction, but it is the patient one who will be flying high in the end.

Wealth, social status and beauty are all definite plus points, but for where? only for the duniya, which means they are such small and temporary gains, while the woman who carries out the commandments of Allah SWT is the one who will be more inclined towards fulfilling her husband's rights and striving to lead an islamic lifestyle, bringing harmony and tranquility into the home, which for many, equates to a happy and healthy marriage.

It is unfortunate that the person who carries the deen is never viewed as being of much value, and yet is this person who carries the greatest asset anyone could ever want. And this brings us back to the previous ayahs in which it is discussed that some people will ask for only the duniya and those who are wise will make the du'a 'rabbana aatina fidunya hasanah wa fil aakhirati hasanah waqina adhaabanar." So even if we ask for the best in the hereafter in our prayers, it is important that we show this sincerity in our actions and in the choices we make for ourselves.

Knowing that it is far better to marry a believing slave than a polytheistic woman goes to show how big an asset knowledge of the deen is, but yet many of us still undermine this asset and might see it as trivial or unimportant in comparison to the delightful worldly assets. I think that Insha'Allah if we make the hereafter our focus, the duniya will be easily handed to us, because only when we change our focus, will we change our perspectives on matters and then our priorities and soon enough our definition of success is entirely different from what it use to be. And so in choosing a spouse for yourself, marry the one with the deen and indeed you will be most successful!

We know that the Quran was revealed as a guidance to mankind and it is from these verses that we can see to which extent we are guided. Not only are we guided in our social, and personal life, but this includes our intimate affairs as well. For many people, topics relating to sexual conduct of any sort is deemed as inappropriate or taboo, however Allah SWT has mentioned that there is no hayaa in matters of the deen and in knowing the truth. And with that in mind, Allah SWT has left the doors open to engage in talks relating to highly personal and intimate affairs, however we still maintain our proper islamic character by not becoming vulgar in our speech when discussing such topics. SubhanAllah in this second ayah, we can see the hikmah behind Allah's SWT wisdom in every one of His commandments relating to sexual intercourse. It is Allah's mercy upon women that He made sexual intercourse haraam during the time of their menstrual cycle due to the many changes, both physical and emotional that a woman goes through. Not only that, but the fact that a husband is to be understanding of his wife's condition is yet another example of how Allah swt has truly exalted woman and bestowed great mercy upon them, which are amongst the many blessings of Allah SWT which we seem to take for granted. But after discussing these ayahs, hopefully it was an eye opener for all of us in allowing us to see how merciful Allah swt is to His servants for which we need to show gratitude in the best of ways and that is through our obedience to Allah SWT

Mu'min (believer) and Sabr (Patience)

Patience is a virtue I'll try to explain
A blessing in disguise always to remain

From very deep inside the well of my heart
Peace of body and mind and the will to start

I'm summoned by a call at the dawn of the day
Just giving thanks to Him as I kneel to pray

Endurance is my counsel and faith my guide
The door is open to the struggle inside

With knowledge of certainty, I now can see
The reality of truth, plain as can be

It is charity that gives meaning to life
From the love of my caring in times of strife

Piety and wisdom help me through the day
But always I will return to kneel and pray

For it is patience, the essence of my goal
That enlightens and gives meaning to my soul.

They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, "In them is great sin and [yet, some] benefit for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit." And they ask you what they should spend. Say, "The excess [beyond needs]." Thus Allāh makes clear to you the verses [of revelation] that you might give thought.

I just had a small reflection to share regarding the ayahs concerning alcohol and gambling. First, I did a presentation on cocaine use and pregnancy in university, and from a study, we learned that alcohol use is co morbid (i.e. when an individual uses alcohol, he/she is more prone to using other drugs as well). Also, after prolonged use of alcohol and other psycho stimulants like cocaine and marijuana, the parts of your brain, which usually respond to natural desires, like food or being with family and friends, increase in their threshold, which is why these natural desires are not pleasurable anymore, and the individual must turn to drugs. Also, from studies I learned that mothers who use cocaine and other drugs put their fetuses and babies in extreme risk and their babies are born with neuropsychological deficits (ex. language problems, low IQ) as well as behavioral deficits (ex. restlessness). Although the mothers know about the risks associated with such drug use, they continue to do so, because as mentioned before, they do not receive pleasure from their babies or interacting with them.

Second, I felt that the personality that was mentioned in Surah Baqarah, in which "he is the most stubborn of disputers",2:204 I feel that that ayahs pertaining to alcohol and gambling are related. This person always wants their own way, and only cares about himself, and will create mischief to attain their goals. Similarly, the person who gambles and is addicted to drugs, will do anything to attain those drugs just to feel good, even if it means disregarding their families and work. Also, when asked to quit drug/alcohol use or gambling, this type of person will usually argue and justify his reasons for indulging in such activities, and when unable to obtain it, he will get into conflicts.

There is so much to learn from the Quran. It shows us the way of life. These are some lessons that I learnt..
Ayah 214-

Or do you think that you will enter Paradise while such [trial] has not yet come to you as came to those who passed on before you? They were touched by poverty and hardship and were shaken until [even their] messenger and those who believed with him said," When is the help of Allāh?" Unquestionably, the help of Allāh is near.

We should know that we are put into trials and difficulties just so Allah (swt) can test us, so Allah (swt) can see our abilities, so Allah (swt) can reward us, and raise our ranks. We should always keep in mind that with the Help of Allah we can overcome any trials, and the help of Allah (swt) is always near. Another point about this ayah is that we should not think that the life of a believer is filled with suffering rather it is a reminder that everyone is tested.
Ayah 218-

Indeed, those who have believed and those who have emigrated and fought in the cause of Allāh – those expect the mercy of Allāh. And Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.

The Mercy of Allah (swt) is our only hope both in this life and in the Hereafter. The Mercy of Allah (swt) is peace and tranquility in the life of this world and salvation in the Hereafter. So we must never lose hope in the Mercy of Allah (swt), rather we must always strive to attain it. How can Allah reward us if we don't put in any effort? You get what you strive for.

I wrote about this ayah yesterday as well and today I have the urge to write about it some more. I have pondered upon it all day. This morning, during group session, as I shared the lessons I had learned from this ayah, I became aware of the bond that this ayah has helped me forge with those who have passed. Allah chose them to struggle in His way, through their struggle He preserved His Deen for us. He required us to pray five times a day that He would bless us the way He blessed them. Each and everyone of them contributed in their own way and today we enjoy the fruits of their labor. I ask myself am I worthy of their legacy? Have I made enough efforts to learn about them and teach my children about them. They are the superstars that my children should be talking about instead of some clown on TV. I have to work harder all of us have to work harder to bring their stories back to life again.

A dear friend once told me that once I start studying the Quran I will experience moments that I will cherish forever. These will be moments that will connect me to the Quran and make me return to it over and over again. I experienced one such incident during class today. You see, I have not been wearing the hijab for very long, only a few months. Some of my family members do not approve of it and have been hoping that it is just a phase that will pass soon, but no one had said anything to me about it as yet. During this morning's break in class I was talking to someone who is very dear to me, and they told me how much they disliked my hijab. I was about to open my mouth to respond to them when all of a sudden I heard takbeerat from my computer. Class was starting, I was surprised, it was five minutes early. I decided to stay quiet and walked away to my computer. As I opened my Juz I noticed I was crying. The lesson started, I tried my best to stay focused but I kept on drifting away and then we reached ayah 214, through my tear filled blurry eyes I read:
"Or do you think you will enter paradise while such trial has not yet come to you as came to those who passed on before you? They were touched by poverty and hardship and were shaken until even their messenger and those who believed with him said, "When is the help of Allah?" Unquestionably the help of Allah is near".

I stopped taking notes and soaked in every word that Sr. Taimiyah was saying, she talked about the hardships that the previous generations of believers have suffered because of their faith, the boycott in Makkah, the physical and mental torture! And here I was, crying, only because someone used some harsh words with me. I felt comforted as if a dear friend was holding my hand and showing me the way. I felt as if this ayah was sent down just for me, to keep me steadfast. I felt humbled by the legacy of those who have passed, their courage and strength made me feel stronger. I pray that I can prove myself worthy of Jannah as they proved themselves worthy of it. Ameen

Gold is something that all people vie for in this dunya but for the gold to shine, it has to be burnt in a crucible to get rid of the dross, the same goes for diamonds they too need to be chipped. Similarly man needs to be tested, knocked and shaken for his true worth to shine!, people who have everything in life.. become complacent, arrogant, callous but people who have gone through a lot in life, become humble, sensitive and they eventually become loved by all… Like Gold! We hear these everyday clichés of such people “she has a heart of gold”, ‘she has sterling qualities”

This was how it was with the prophets and the righteous people..They were tested the most and they were the most beloved to Allah swt. I would like to share a parable that I read….

A man found a cocoon of a butterfly.
One day a small opening appeared.
He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours
as it struggled to squeeze its body through the tiny hole.
Then it stopped, as if it couldn't go further.

So the man decided to help the butterfly.
He took a pair of scissors and
snipped off the remaining bits of cocoon.
The butterfly emerged easily but
it had a swollen body and shriveled wings.

The man continued to watch it,
expecting that any minute the wings would enlarge
and expand enough to support the body,
Neither happened!

In fact the butterfly spent the rest of its life
crawling around.
It was never able to fly.

What the man in his kindness
and haste did not understand:
The restricting cocoon and the struggle
required by the butterfly to get through the opening
was a way of forcing the fluid from the body
into the wings so that it would be ready
for flight once that was achieved.

Sometimes struggles are exactly
what we need in our lives.
Going through life with no obstacles would cripple us.
We will not be as strong as we could have been
and we would never fly.

Remember whatever test you go through in life ‘the help of Allah is indeed near”- It is a promise of Allah! And the promise of Allah is True! Rejoice!

And when it is said to him, "Fear Allāh," pride in the sin takes hold of him. Sufficient for him is Hellfire, and how wretched is the resting place.

And of the people is he who sells himself, seeking means to the approval of Allāh. AndAllāh is kind to [His] servants.

O you who have believed, enter into Islām completely [and perfectly] and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.

But if you deviate after clear proofs have come to you, then know that Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise.

Do they await but that Allāh should come to them in covers of clouds and the angels [as well] and the matter is [then] decided? And toAllāh [all] matters are returned.

Ask the Children of Israel how many a sign of evidence We have given them. And whoever exchanges the favor of Allāh [for disbelief] after it has come to him – then indeed, Allāh is severe in penalty.

Beautified for those who disbelieve is the life of this world, and they ridicule those who believe. But those who fear Allāh are above them on the Day of Resurrection. And Allāhgives provision to whom He wills without account.

Since I have started to learn the Quran, I have witnessed so many incidents that happen in our daily lives all around the world and within ourselves. Subhanallah Allah is aware of everything and that is why there is an ayah for every situation. Like the ayahs we learned yesterday verses 206-212 in surah Baqarah. People are so self-centered and really only care for their own benefits therefore they will go to any extends whether it is harmful to anyone or hurtful, they don’t care. In verse 208 Allah tells us to enter Islam completely but unfortunately many Muslims choose and pick whatever suits them and is easy for them. They don't think about their akhirah and that they themselves will benefit from it. Remember when Allah says that no one will suffice for each other on the day of judgement and no compensation will be accepted. (Baqarah: 123) May Allah give us tawfeeq to fulfill all the commands of Allah and save us from following the footsteps of shaitan. Ameen

Most Comprehensive Dua

We all know the most commonly read Dua which we often read without even pondering upon it. Today, while I sat in the tafsir class the understanding I got of this dua was very different. After this understanding I made this dua from the depth of my heart so I thought I would share this with you as well.

”RABBANA ATINA FID DUNYA HASANA WA FIL AKHIRATI HASANA WA QINA AZAB AN NNAR"

When we ask for Hasana in dunya, we think of all the good things we want to get in dunya but there is much more to it.

It includes all the the worldly things that are in our favor, it could be the opportunity to do good deeds in dunya, also more guidance in everything that we do, the ability to understand things, to have a good character , to be saved from being put in any trials at the last moments of our lives.

Hasanah in Akhirah means to start the journey of our next lives comfortably, to be able to give correct answers in the grave, to be able to receive glad tidings from angels, to be granted easy reckoning, to get the book of deeds in the right hand, to pass through the Sirat [bridge] with ease, to enter Jannah and to be able to see and meet Allah(s.w.t) inshaAllah.

Waqina azab annar means to be saved from experiencing the fire even for a fraction of a second.

Allah says such people who make this dua have their share in both worlds according to what they have earned.

Lets not just read this dua but make this dua keeping all this in mind with sincere heart and also work hard for it. Lets make this dunya a place to earn for the life hereafter.

Surah Baqarah Verses 206-207

And of the people is he whose speech pleases you in worldly life, and he calls Allāh to witness as to what is in his heart, yet he is the fiercest of opponents.

And when he goes away, he strives throughout the land to cause corruption therein and destroy crops and animals. And Allāh does not like corruption.

And when it is said to him, "Fear Allāh," pride in the sin takes hold of him. Sufficient for him is Hellfire, and how wretched is the resting place.

The Quran is full of imagery and these ayahs paint a picture of a person who is extremely selfish, who is hypocritical. It shows us a portrait of a mischief maker, whose mentality is “me myself and I”.

Sometimes when we read such ayahs we read it from a third person perspective, we become desensitized and we think it is not about me, but each and every ayah of the Quran should be read as though it was revealed to you!

The mentality that is conveyed to us today is :“Do whatever you want , you live only once”, but here Allah is reminding us to take account of our actions, for Whatever we do, has a domino effect- it affects ourselves, family, and eventually society as a whole.

Many times we try to impress people with our “Honeyed speech”, our quest in life is Pleasure of people, These ayahs teach us that if a person doesn’t break his ego he increases in sin. Arrogance is a means of increase in sin. It causes a person to be argumentative, condescending , deceptive etc, If a person doesn’t break his ego in this world- his ego will be broken in the hellfire- Al Huthamah- the crusher that will not only break him physically but also break his pride .

These ayahs taught me that I need to take account of my actions NOW before I am taken to account by Allah swt in the Akhira

Verse 207- In this Ayah we see a completely different personality- one who gives up himself to seek the approval of Allah. The Quran is of perfect balance, in the previous ayahs Allah swt tells us whom we shouldn’t be like and in this ayah Allah swt tells us the personality which we should adopt

The First personality is of a hypocrite who hoards all for himself, and the personality that is depicted here is of a person who gives up everything for Allah!

In order to gain Allah’s pleasure we need to give up something that we love. In surah Ale Imran ayah 92 Allah says “You will never attain piety unless you spend from that which you love”

2 different personalities and two different outcomes

“Me My self and I” attitude ========== Jahannam is the resting place- the word mihad – a cradle – is used which shows divine sarcasm

Allah above all – sells oneself for Allah ======= Allah’s Kindness, successful trade, Allah’s pleasure

What is most beloved to a person is his own self!... if you love your child it is because he/she is your child, if you Love your spouse it is because he brings comfort to you, whatever we love is because it brings comfort to us..so we learn that If you sacrifice what you love the most – which is your own self, Allah will be pleased with you, and Allah’s pleasure is the greatest gift for a believer!

Remember Our spiritual condition in this world will be our physical condition in the Akhirah!

And spend in the way of Allāh and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allāh loves the doers of good.

We are hasty. We are quick to complain, and when we see something or enter a place, it's easier for us to notice the deficiencies instead of thinking to ourselves: "How can I help, even in the smallest way? Even if JUST for today?" Be proactive, and offer your services, ask whoever is in charge: "How can I help you today or in the long-run?" We should NEVER think that our effort (even if very small, like picking up a piece of garbage from the street), goes to waste, no, it makes a difference. Wherever you are, be helpful - don't always be a consumer or "participant", if you go to an event, or the Masjid, or to someone's place, smile and ask the person who you see is doing most of the work, "how can I help?".

Gem: Use your time, efforts, talents and skills for the sake of Allah - find what you are good at, and use that skill or talent feesabillaah

But to fast is best for you, if you only knew.

The month of Ramadhān [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’ān, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey – then an equal number of other days. Allāhintends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allāh for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.

And when My servants ask you, [O Muúammad], concerning Me – indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided.

[Surah Al-Baqarah: 184-185]: Allah (swt) has made Deen very easy for us, we ourselves have made it difficult. Allah (swt) bestowed His Mercy on us. We should obey all the commands of Allah (swt) as they are for our benefit.

[Surah Al-Baqarah: 186]: Allah (swt) is very close to us. We should ask for each & every thing from Allah (swt).When Allah(swt) is very close to us, so why should we seek help from others?

Reflection: I am amazed at how much a tiny three letter word told me about myself today. The word is "safarin" from the root letters "seen faa raa" which means to reveal something and safarin means a journey - because a person's true self is revealed in a journey! I looked back at various journeys I have taken in the past and how at times I have been rude and impolite. I always dismissed my behavior by using some baseless excuse such as "oh I was tired" or "oh I was frustrated". Today this little word told me that that was the real me! I am still shocked as I always considered myself to be so well mannered. It is amazing how we deceive ourselves. Now I know, the me I see on a journey is the real me. What a big challenge this little word has presented me with. I pray to Allah SWT that I can rise and accept this challenge. Ameen

Surah Baqarah Verses 178 and 179

O you who have believed, prescribed for you is legal retribution for those murdered – the free for the free, the slave for the slave, and the female for the female. But whoever overlooks from his brother anything, then there should be a suitable follow-up and payment to him with good conduct. This is an alleviation from your Lord and a mercy. But whoever transgresses after that will have a painful punishment.

And there is for you in legal retribution [saving of] life, O you [people] of understanding, that you may become righteous.

The focal point of these verses appears to be the idea of qisas, which translates to equal retribution in Islam. The literal meaning of Islam is Submission [to Allah]. Islam is defined as ‘Submission [to Allah] and is derived from a word meaning "peace," for it is in submitting to Allah’s Will that human beings gain peace in their lives in this world and the hereafter. Islam is a religion that promotes peace in all circumstances…

With regards to qisaas in these verses, when you kill someone, it is the law that the same be done to you. Subhanallah, look at the justice...an eye for an eye. However for those who fail to see the justice in such a law, by the mercy of Allah SWT and His acknowledgement that all people are different and think and feel in
various ways, has given two alternate options given that the heirs of the one murdered wish not to kill the offender, and that is either to take blood money from the offender in place of his life, or to forgive the offender altogether by not taking his life and forgiving the blood money which was due. And though any one of these three options is permissible, Allah SWT has commanded that we choose the first, and that is to take the life of the offender and subhanallah we can see the hikmah in this, that by ending the life of the offender, it's effects on society as a whole are positive. People can see the consequences of taking the sanctity of human life, whereas if the offender is forgiven, then he will feel no shame which may lead him to repeating his actions and there is no justice in that. In relation to statistics if comparing Saudi Arabia, where capital punishment is instilled to Canada for instance where it is not, the number of murders committed in Canada is substantial in comparison to
Saudia Arabia, so looking at this matter from an overall perspective, peace actually lies in capital punishment subhanallah!!! Many times we fail to see the bigger picture of any particular matter and rather we focus more closely on the immediate effects. So for those who view qisaas as barbaric, unjust or contrary to peace which
is the essence of our religion, might want to give it a second thought and reconsider as losing the life of one is far greater than losing the lives of many which is what we are witnessing in the world today.

Surah Baqarah Verse 177

Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allāh, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakāh; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous. [al-Baqarah:177]

What it means to be a Muslim?

This ayah in a Nutshell defines who a Muslim should be". I remember reading ", to be a Muslim means--in a fundamental way--to be both Allah-conscious and creature-conscious.

This ayah helps us to understand the interconnectedness of all aspects of one's life, spiritual, social, economical, First and foremost is rights of Allah- Huququllah and then rights of people- Huququl ibaad. We find the epitome; role model of "Birr" in the life of the Prophet (saw), the reason was because prophet (saw) was able to balance spiritual and secular levels of his life.

Righteousness is not whether you turn your face towards the east or west, but righteousness is to believe in Allah, the last day, the angels, the books and the prophets, and to spread wealth out of love for Him (or It) on relatives, orphans, helpless, needy, travelers, those who ask and on the redemption of captives; and to establish salah and to pay zakah, to fulfill promises when made, to be steadfast in distress, in adversity and at the time of war. These people are the truthful, and these are the pious.

Alhamdulillah, we are very fortunate that Allah (SWT) explained to us what exactly righteousness is.

Earlier we learned the hadith – “Abu Sa’id Al- Khudri (R) reported: The Prophet (S) said “ A believer never gets discontented with good until he finally reaches Jannah” – At-Tirmidhi

And in the beginning of the ayah we learn that righteousness is a person who believes in Allah and in the last day – that he believes that the hereafter is his final abode and this duniya is only temporary. Not only does he believe this but it effects his life, his actions, his way of thinking, everything.

So if a person believes this and implements this he will never think – “I have done enough, I’m done, that’s it for me.” He will continue to “Race towards the Good”

In the "Play" of life we have certain worldly props we depend on which are:

Support from others- such as our children, parents, wealth etc
Help from Influential people
Asking others to intercede on our behalf
Ransom's and bribes

In this beautiful Ayah Allah swt destroys all these worldly props saying

No support, no help, No intercession, No ransom will benefit you on the day of Judgment..

But the difference between the 'Plays" of the dunya and Allah's Book is that reviews of a play in dunya are given AFTER the play is over but Allah swt is giving us the review BEFORE the play of Life is Over! so it is up to us to benefit from the review before we "Perform" each act in every step of our life. It teaches us that if we want to see good reviews of our Life On the day of Judgment we need to Prepare well ahead for that day

Assalaamu-Alaikum,

Though I enrolled late into the class and missed the entire first juz, I did manage to skim through it and my reflections on the juz was that it seems as though Allah SWT has made his signs crystal clear to us and easy for us to understand, yet we still cannot come to show full obedience to Him. It is clear that Allah SWT has taken a covenant from each and every one of us and yet we make full attempts to break that covenant every single time.

What is stopping us from believing in the absolute truth?? Why is it that we can verbally say that we believe, but we find it so difficult for our actions to show that belief? Must we see the hell fire first hand in order for us to TRULY believe? Must we see Jannah first hand in order for us to truly believe?? It is disheartening that Allah SWT has sent down the Quran as guidance for us and the Prophets to relay the message of Allah SWT, but still we don’t think it’s enough for us to accept the truth. May Allah SWT have mercy on all of us and increase our taqwa and our imaan so that we may be most righteous and be amongst the al-mumineen.

The Greatest Treasure

We all strive to fill our bank accounts and lockers with treasure but in doing so we completely forget about the greatest treasure of all sitting right there in our book shelf, yes it is the GLORIOUS QURAN, it's not just a book it's filled with treasure, not in every surah, not in every ayah but in each and every "hurf" is a gem for us, waiting to be collected and saved. How can we do so? Very easy, read it, understand it, and implement it BUT NO! don't stop there encourage others to do the same and you will see and feel the difference in your life as well as in the lives of those around you, and if we keep striving in this manner INSHALLAH the entire Muslim ummah will adopt the path loved and blessed by Allah(s.w.t)

but NO NO NO!! DON'T STOP there not just Muslims but also those in the shade of darkness, it is our duty to invite them towards the true book and may ALLAH guide us all towards the success in duniya and akhira.

Surah Baqarah Verse 7

Allāh has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their vision is a veil. And for them is a great punishment. Surah Baqarah Verse 7

We covered this verse in lesson 3, and up until then I was taking this course very logically, and as factual statements from the Quran. As a psychology student, I have been learning for the past 4 years in university that the brain is the seat of perception and reasoning, not the heart. However, in this ayah Allah SWT mentions thatHe has sealed the disbelievers' hearts...it does not say brain!

In trying to make amends between what I was learning from the Quran and what I learned in university, I realized that from experimental work, as an organ, the brain has no sense of feeling or pain. It has receptors and neurotransmitters that are sent to other parts of the body so that we are able to interact with our surroundings. Therefore, the heart is the seat of reasoning and perception, and I learned that I must open my heart, and not just my brain if I truly want to benefit from the Quran. Also, I realized that even when we are taking notes, or thinking about the Quran and gaining simply factual knowledge, we may not benefit if our hearts are "sealed" as mentioned in this verse. Consequently, if Allah seals our hearts, because of our own lack of usage, our eyes and sense of hearing would also be covered up.

Therefore, the heart is not simply an organ like the brain, rather, it is a means through which we can understand the Quran and obtain guidance from it

Surah Baqarah

Assalaamualaykum wa rahmatuAllah,

I was bursting with excitement when we began this Juzz. Surah al-Baqarah is one of the Surahs I recite and listen to the most, and I was eager to know its message and what it was telling me. Throughout the Juzz the lesson that I felt the most was having the Taqwa of Allah. After asking guidance from Allah in Surah Fatiha, we learned that the Qur'an is the guidance, and only the Muttaqeen take benefit. Surah Baqarah Verse 2 “This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allāh”
In verse 63,Allah tells us that we need to take the book firmly and remember what is in it so that we can get Taqwa. Throughout when Allah mentions the stories of Bani Israel, they lacked Taqwa and strong faith.
Tonight the Imam was reciting Surah Maryam in Taraweeh, in verse 63 "That is the paradise which We make to inherit of Our servants whoever was god fearing."Jannah is also for the Muttaqeen.

Fear Allah wherever I am and whomever I am with .

Lesson 3: Al Baqara: A 6-7

Ayah 6-7

Tafseer:

6. Indeed, those who disbelieve – it is all the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them – they will not believe.

These are the 2^nd group of people from Surah Al Fatiha – those who earned Allah’s anger.

They are those who disbelieve in everything that Prophet (saw) brought. They don’t believe in Allah nor the Day of Judgment.

It is same for them whether you warn them or not warn them about the end, it will not make any difference to them. They won’t believe. Guidance is in hands of Allah.

7. Allāh has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their vision is a veil. And for them is a great punishment.

Allah has set a seal upon their hearts; hence they are not able to get the guidance. Also has seal over their hearing, they can’t hear when Quran is being recited, also their eyes has a covering, they can’t see the signs hence they can’t reflect.

Consequently they’ll get a great punishment, in its intensity and its time.

This message is for the polytheists in Makkah, the Jews in Madina and after that everyone. Knowledge came to them yet they disbelieved.

Prophet (saw)’s character was a proof that he was a real prophet. Yet they were not able to recognize.

Heart is like a machine, if we stop using it. It will become rusty and stop working. The kaafir stop using their faculties.

Allah has sealed their hearts because of their actions. They do not want guidance themselves

[Surah Saff: 5] – “... And when they deviated, Allāh caused their hearts to deviate. And Allāh does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.”

This is the result of their actions, Allah has given these faculties (of hearing, seeing and reflecting) but as revenge due to His anger He has taken away these faculties from them.

[Jasiya: 23] - Have you seen he who has taken as his god his [own] desire, and Allāh has sent him astray due to knowledge and has set a seal upon his hearing and his heart and put over his vision a veil? So who will guide him after Allāh? Then will you not be reminded?

Accept this message to show gratitude that you recieved it.

Kinds of Kufr:

1) Major disbelieve – anyone who does this is taken out from the fold of Islam

· Kufr of rejection/ denial. Person disbelieves in Allah and then His messengers and books

· Kufr due to arrogance. Know this is the truth but he refuses.

· Kufr due to doubt and suspicion

· Kufr of turning away

· Kufr of hypocrisy

2) Minor disbelieve – doesn’t take one out of fold of Islam

· Kufr of ingratitude

[Hadith] - "Whoever has three things discovers the sweetness of Iman: that Allah and His Messenger are more beloved to him than all else, that he love another only for the sake of Allah Most High, and that he hate to return to kufr (disbelief) as he would hate to be thrown into fire." [Bukhari & Muslim]

Lesson 2 – Surah Al Baqara: Ayah 1-5

Tafseer:

AL BAQARA - Surah # 2 – Introduction

· Prophet (saw) said : “Do not turn your houses into graveyards for Satan runs away from the house in which Surah Al-Baqara is recited” [Muslim]

· Prophet (saw) said: “Read Surah Al Baqara for indeed its reading is a blessing. Leaving it is a source of regret. And falsehood cannot overcome it/ sorcerers cannot tamper with it”

· These two Surahs (Al Baqarah and Ale-Imran) are called “Zahrawain”- The two lights on Day of Judgment and they will come as 2 clouds and shade the believers who recite them. They’ll come like in 2 lines of birds, or like umbrella.

· This is the longest surah of Qur’an, covers approx. 2.5 Juz, has 286 verses and it’s a Madini Surah. Revealed after the migration of Prophet (saw) to Madina

· The literal meaning of Al-Baqara is The Cow as there is a mention of a cow in the chapter. Although a part of it was revealed in Mecca, it is a Madina Surah as a major portion of it was revealed in Madina.

Ayah:

1. Alif, Lām, Meem.

Huroof Muqatta’at – disjointed letters. Written together but read separately.

· [Ibn Taimiyyah – a scholar, he said]: “Arabs are being reminded that Quran is composed in their same language – Arabic but the Quran is inimitable”. Nobody can change it not anything is similar to it. Quran is Miraculous.

· [Abu Bakr]: “Every book has a secret and Allah’s secret in this book is Huroof Muqatta’at - these letters”

None but Allah knows the true meaning of these letters. There have been many theories advanced but these are just theories. No one can say with certainty because Allah did not tell us.

[Hadith] - Reciting one letter of the Quran brings you 10 virtues. Alif-Laam-Mim is not one word but 3 letters.

2. This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allāh

This Qur’an is a book that has no doubts in it. It is an honored book; it is a great book with high status. Read this book with contentment it will give you peace at heart.

§ Its 1^st original copy is in Lawh ul Mehfooz, in the 7^th Heaven. It is a preserved tablet. It is at the top most place.

§ 2^nd copy is with the angels [Abasa: 12-16].

§ 3^rd copy is with us. Shouldn’t you feel honored? A copy that is with the angels is with you.

Raib – is a doubt that makes you restless. There is no doubt in it and there is no other book in the world which can make this claim. This book is the only authentic book in the world.

This is a claim that cannot be made by any author on the earth whether dead or alive.

Quran is guidance - هُدًى

It is a book that came to guide the Muttaqeen. They are those who save themselves from the sin fearing punishment of Allah. Allah gives knowledge to everyone but the one who adopts this guidance is the one who is Muttaqee i.e. one who has Taqwa (consciousness of Allah). People have hidaya irshad (knowledge) in front of them, but the hidaya tawfeeq (implementation of the knowledge) comes from a person with in himself if he desires it.

3. Who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them

Qualities of Muttaqeen:

A) They believe in the unseen. They believe with their heart, say it with tongue and prove in their actions. Unseen = Things that we should believe in that are unseen ex. Resurrection after death.

B) They establish their Prayer - Salah. They pray according to Prophet (saw) - Sunnah, pray on time, with proper attire, with proper ablution – wudhu. Pray while giving each position its right and pray with tranquility. Praying five times regularly.

C) They spend from whatever they get from Allah. They spend the wealth they have in way of Allah. Spend whatever they possess whether its wealth or knowledge or anything.

Have a balanced life and spend in the balanced way giving right to all your relatives, family, needy, poor etc. Everything we have is from Allah SWT. We can show our gratitude by spending what Allah gave us in His way.

[Hadith] – Prophet (saw) said: “Sadaqa (Charity) does not reduce our wealth”

4. And who believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you, and of the Hereafter they are certain [in faith].

More qualities of Muttaqeen:

D) They also believe in what was revealed upon prophet (saw). Believe in everything that was revealed to Prophet (saw) included both: 1) Qur’an 2) Hadith/ Sunnah

E) They also affirm that the previous books were revealed by Allah i.e. Torah, Injeel, Zaboor. Islam is the only religion that accepts all the previous books and messengers. They believe in Ibrahim (as)’s leaflets, Dawood (as)’s Psalms (The Zaboor), Injeel and Torah - the Book of the Jews, the Book of the Christians.

F) They are certain that the Day of Judgment is coming. Believe without doubt. To believe in Dunya (world/life) only will lead to destruction.

5. Those are upon [right] guidance from their Lord, and it is those who are the successful.

· it. They were on guidance in Dunya - had knowledge + implementation (guidance).

· This is the key to success. Success you get after putting some effort.

· Complete success = he who is removed from fire and admitted to jannah (no ultimate success in dunya)

· Person works hard in dunya, they are on guidance therefore their Dunya is successful and so is their Akhirah. One who has achieved Paradise – (Jannah) has got success.

· In dunya everything has limits, happiness/sorrow has limits. Hereafter is limitless. Jannah’s vastness is as vast as the heavens and earths. There is no end to happiness, there will be no change. There is no boredom in Jannah.

Recap Surah Baqara Ayah 1-5

· When Iman comes to you, it beautifies you from inside. It purifies you from inside. It is important to have and it is purely for your own sake.

· Ibadah: firstly establish prayer – it teaches you discipline, punctuality, patience, focus, humility, unity, organization, purification. Our Ibadah are not just rituals they also build our character

· Zakah: giving and sharing with others, purification

· Saum: fasting gives us patience because one is controlling his biggest desire that is hunger. It teaches discipline.

· Hajj: journey through difficulty, makes you discipline, makes you social, live in difficult circumstances

· All these ibadah helps you to live with others, share with others. Makes personality complete.

· Relation with others must be based on the principle of giving and not getting. First you should give and then take.

· These basic qualities make you Muttaqee.

· Muflihoon: only after putting an effort.

Lesson 1 : Surah Al Fatiha

Tafseer:

Background

• Surah Al Fatiha is a Makki Surah (i.e. revealed before Hijra of Prophet (saw))
• 5th surah to be revealed in Chronology
• It was the first Surah (Chapter) that was revealed completely
• The first 3 verses glorify Allah and the rest of the ayats (Verses) are a prayer/dua (Invocation)
• We recite surah Fatiha 17 times in our salah daily. It is the most recited Surah.

• This is the greatest Surah of the Qur’an
• Al-Fatiha literally means ‘The Opening’

o Because it is the opening of the Quran
o Prayer opens with Surah Al-Fatiha
o It is the opening of the door to guidance itself

Names of Fatiha

Al Fatiha, Al Asas (Foundation), Ummul Kitab (Mother of the book), Ummul Qur’an (Mother of the Qur’an), Saba’ al-Masani (7 oft repeated verses), As-Salah (the prayer), Al Shifa (Healing), Al Ruqya (Remedy), Al Hamd (All Praise), Fatihatul Kitab (Opening of the book)

Virtues of Surah Fathiha

Hazrat Abu Saeed ibn Al-Mu’alla radiyallahu anhu said,
"While I was praying in the Masjid, the Prophet sallallahu alaihe wasallam called me. I did not answer him then, but went to him afterwards and explained that I had been praying, whereupon he asked me whether Allah Ta’ala had not said, ‘Respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you.’
adding, ‘Let me teach you the greatest Surah in the Qur’aan before you leave the Masjid.’ He then took me by the hand and when we were about to go out I reminded him of his promise to me that he would teach me the greatest Surah in the Qur’aan. He said, Surah Fatihah which is the seven oft-repeated verses in the Mighty Qur’aan which has been given to me."

Hazrat Abu Hurairah radiyallahu anhu reported that when Allah’s Messenger sallallahu alaihe wasallam once asked Ubayy ibn Ka’ab radiyallahu anhu, what he recited in his prayers. He replied Umm-ul Qur’aan (Surah Fatihah) the Holy Prophet proclaimed,
"By Him in whose dominion my soul is, nothing like it has been revealed in the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, or the Qur’aan and it is seven of the oft-repeated verses in the Mighty Qur’aan which I have been given."

VERSES:

1. In the name of Allāh, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

Begin recitation with Seeking refuge from Satan
Evidence – Surah 16:98
When we start to do anything good Satan tries to hinder us. We need Allah’s help

o Allah starts by saying بِسْمِ اللّهِ الرَّحْمـَنِ الرَّحِيمِ. In the Name of Allah the most forgiving the repeatedly Merciful.
o This is the traditional opening of the Quran
o To invoke His Mercy
o It is His Book, so we start with His name
o Prophet Sal said “Any act which is not started with Bismillah is devoid of blessings”

• Prophet taught us to start every deed, every act with بِسْمِ اللّهِ الرَّحْمـَنِ الرَّحِيمِ

2. [All] praise is [due] to Allāh, Lord of the worlds

Everything that Allah has given us, Alhumdulilah for it. All Praise for Allah. Praise Allah in every circumstance. This praise for Allah is out of Love, Respect and Gratitude to Allah. It is because He is the Lord of the worlds. He is the planner, he is maintaining everything.

He is the Creator [Khaliq], Owner [Malik] and Planner [Mudabbir]
Level of praising humans (Madh) and Allah’s praise (Hamdh) is not the same.

Allah praise for Allah for everything we asked for and we got and what we didn’t ask for and He still gave us, for ex. our faculties, our parents. He also provides provision for us when we are in the womb of our mother.

When he saw some bad he said” Alhamdullilah Ala Kulli Hal”- “Praise Be to Allah on all conditions”

3. The Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful

He is Ar-Rahman and Ar-Raheem. His Lordship is based on Mercy and compassion

Rahman - in a broader sense means His Mercy encompasses all of mankind whether we deserve it or not. He is Ar-Rahman for everybody whether you are a believer or not Allah will give whom He wants.

Raheem - Allah is repeatedly and especially merciful for the believers. (Superlative)

4. Sovereign of the Day of Recompense.

Allah is the owner of the Day of Judgment. That Day He’ll have complete authority.
It’s a Day when deeds will be accounted. Everything is in the hands of Allah. Instead of relying on people we should rely on Allah. Turn to Allah, prepare today for that day.

Maalik = Owner and Malik = Sovereign. In this world there are kings & rulers, on the Day of Judgment ONLY ALLAH IS THE OWNER

5. It is You we worship and You we ask for help

We should only worship only Him Alone. Worship out of Love and Respect.

This is manifested through our actions, through our Ibadaat for ex. Salah - We put the most prominent part of our body to the level of our feet [by prostration].
We are created to do His ibadah.
Everything is Glorifying Allah.The one who recognizes Allah; he is the one who turns to Allah. It is our choice. Man is created weak, we always depend on others. We should ask Allah for our needs.

Worship is not complete without Dua – they go side by side
Prophet (saw) and the sahabas turned to Allah in EVERY Situation.

6. Guide us to the straight path –

1st Dua Allah has taught us. Guidance is in Allah’s hands.

We are asking Allah to show us the way and give us the Tawfeeq (ability) to implement the knowledge to keep us on the path

There are two types of Guidance:
1) Hidaya Irshad/ Bayaan = Guidance that leads to knowledge
2) Hidaya Tawfeeq = Allah gives the guidance to implement the knowledge. A person gets when he asks for it. Leads to actions.

In this dua when we say “Guide us to the straight path” we are asking for the knowledge as well as implementation to that knowledge. Also asking Allah to show us the way, make us steadfast on the way and also lead us to the destination i.e. Jannah. It is the path of Allah, path of knowledge.

7. The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray.

What is Siratal Mustaqeen?
Path of Deen/Islam, Quran, Path of Knowledge

Definition of Siratal Mustaqeen - 3 Categories:
1. The way of those whom you favored
2. Not those who have earned your wrath
3. Not those who went astray

1st category = those who are bestowed with Allah’s favor.

[Nisa: 69] – Allah has bestowed His favor upon the Prophets, the Truthful ones, Martyrs and the Righteous ones.
Truthful are those like Abu Bakr (Ra), Martyrs are those who give up their lives for Allah, Righteous are those who obey Allah and follow Prophet (saw).

They got the blessing of Deen, Islam. They are the ones upon the guidance. They have knowledge and action. Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Allah. Make dua to be like them.

2nd category = those who have earned Allah’s anger. They have Ilm (knowledge) but they did not apply it. Example – people of Nuh (as), Aad, Samood, Qaroon

3rd category = those who are astray. They have no knowledge and no practice.

Recap of Surah Al Fatiha

• Why is this surah given this name?
This name is given because it is the opening of the Qur’an. It is the foundation of Qur’an.

• Any act that is begin with Bismillah, that act is blessed by Allah.

• Al Hamd - This praise is done due to Allah’s perfection. Out of love and respect. Alhumdulilah for those things that He has given us without us asking Him. Ex: water, oxygen. Our survival depends on many different things. He created others for us, but created us for His worship.

• Allah is the Rabb of All the worlds - world of mankind, jinn, animals etc. He is sustaining everything. He is managing this whole Universe. His lordship is based on mercy and compassion. Allah’s planning is not in vain.

• Why Day of Judgment is called Day of Recompense? Yaum-ad-deen?
Because that day the good will be returned with good and bad with bad. Everything will be recompensed. Only Allah will have authority on that day alone. Every single person from the beginning till end will be brought forth that day.

• Dua is a form of worship. First dua that Allah taught us: “Guide us to the straight path”. We should seek help with Allah for everything but especially ‘siraat al-mustakeen’. He has given us food, water etc without asking. But to get guidance we have to ask Allah for it. Its just not knowing the knowledge, you have to walk upon it and then reach the destination. 1) knowledge 2) action 3) result

• Allah bestowed his favor of Islam to the Nabiyeen, Siddiqeen, Shuhada and Saliheen. They got the knowledge and implement on it. This is the straight path.

• Wrong path: those who had the knowledge but didn’t apply and those who didn’t had any knowledge. This is the opposite of straight path. Don’t go on this path, it will earn Allah’s anger and will lead you astray. If a person deviates from the right path, that person will be lost. And never come back.

• Aameen – ‘O Rabb accept this from us’. Blessing of saying Aameen after surah Al Fatiha, is that the angels are saying Ameen too along with you and all your sins will be forgiven.

لَوۡ أَنزَلۡنَا هَـٰذَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ عَلَىٰ جَبَلٍ۬ لَّرَأَيۡتَهُ ۥ خَـٰشِعً۬ا مُّتَصَدِّعً۬ا مِّنۡ خَشۡيَةِ ٱللَّهِ‌ۚ وَتِلۡكَ ٱلۡأَمۡثَـٰلُ نَضۡرِبُہَا لِلنَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ

"Had We sent down this Qur'an on a mountain, verily, thou wouldst have seen it humble itself and cleave asunder for fear of Allah. Such are the similitudes which We propound to men, that they may reflect". [Surah Al Hashr: 21]

-* Qur’an is a revelation of the Lord of the Worlds.

-* Angel Jibreel (as) brought it down on the earth by Will of Allah. Jibreel (as) is known as a Holy spirit, Ruh Al Quds

-* It was revealed upon the heart of Prophet Muhammad (saw).

-* It was revealed in an Arabic language. Allah made Qur’an easy to understand.

-* It came down in the form of Surah’s (Chapters). Ayahs (Verses) form together Surah’s

-* Qur’an was revealed in stages gradually. it was to strengthen the resolve of Prophet (saw), to reassure him (saw) and to console him.

-* The Qur’an was revealed in the blessed month of Ramadan. During the last 10 nights of the Laylatul Qadr.

-* It was revealed to Guide Mankind. [Ibrahim: 1]

-* Firstly Sahaba were the direct recipients of the Qur’an and then All of the mankind

-* Qur’an is upright; there is no doubt in it, no faults.

-* Names of the Qur’an
o Al Quran = One that is read a lot.
o Al Kitab = The Book
o Al Furqan = Distinguishes between truth & falsehood, tawheed from shirk etc
o Al Dhikr = Remembrance
o At-Tanzeel = Revelation

-* Quran is blessed, it is the greatest blessing anything anyone can have.

-* "And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allâh (i.e. this Qur'ân), and be not divided among yourselves" [ Ale Imran: 103]
Qur’an is a rope of Allah: One part is with Allah and the other part is in your hand. It connects you directly to Allah. Rejoice and hold on to it, if you leave it you’ll be destroyed, if you hold on to it then it is means of salvation in the world and the hereafter.

-* You should live the book, study the book, it should be with you all the time, carry with you all the time

-* People of Qur’an are the chosen ones and they are people of Allah

-* [Hadith] - The best among you is the one who learns the Qur’an and teaches it. Mercy surrounds them, angels join the gathering and Allah remembers them in His gathering of angels.

Welcome to Al Huda Institute

The purpose of gaining knowledge is to get the pleasure of Allah, to be admitted in Paradise and to be saved from Hell. Islam brings peace, guidance and everything that you need. Purify your intention.

• At the end of the course, we want to be better than when we began

• Hadith - When Allah wishes good for you, then He bestows understanding of Deen to you

• Hadith – The best among you is the one who learns the Quran and teaches it.

• Qur’an is a great treasure. Achieve it. Grasp it.

• Make firm purpose and resolution to leave everyday better than we came in the morning

• Shaytan will come and stop you through fear, doubts, and obstacles from you getting this treasure and to prevent your connection with Allah.

• Take your family along with you through this journey of Qur’an. Knowledge increases with sharing.

• He is loved by Allah who learns and implements the knowledge of Allah.

• If you study the deen of Allah, you know your reward is with Allah.

• Hadith - The Messenger of Allah (saw) said, “The expert of the Qur’an is with the honorable scribes (angels) and the one who recites Quran with a stutter, with difficulty will get a double reward”

• If you value Allah’s Kalaam (His Speech) and efforts then Allah values you and your efforts.

- Because Allah chose this language, Arabic can convey meanings that no other language can convey
- Miracle of Qur’an is realized only through this

To gain anything, you have to give something.

If you have something precious and valuable, your enemy tries to snatch it away from you. Here your enemy is the Shaytan, since you got the opportunity to study the Qur’an, to gain knowledge.

Knowledge is in 2 parts:
1. Knowledge itself
2. The etiquettes of knowledge

Abdullah bin Mubarak said: “Adab is 2/3rd of knowledge”

Etiquette of Seeking Knowledge

1. Sincerity – is it for Allah?
2. Concentration – focus in class
3. Silence – Internal and External (ex. Thoughts)
4. Perceive the knowledge – listen to it, ask questions
5. Ponder and reflect – take out lessons for yourself
6. Express the knowledge that you gain – express though speaking or writing to family and friends
7. Have correct attitude – “Your attitude determines your altitude”
8. Benefit from the resources around you – scholars, internet, books etc.
9. Love those who are around you – respect, care for them, don’t have grudges

Objectives of Learning Qur’an – what are we trying to achieve

2 ways to achieve the task:

1. just do it, in any way or form
2. excel in a task, do in the best possible way with Ihsan

Goals

o To understand the meaning of the Qur’an – directly from Mushaf. Giving justice to it.

o Prioritize the Qur’an – give the importance that it deserves

o To inculcate Taqwa in our hearts within ourselves – to fear Allah and be pious.

o Connect to Allah – Because Allah is the Greatest, He is the ONE who created us from nothingness, He sent us the Messenger Prophet (saw), He is the ONE who got us out of darkness’s, He created man so that we Worship HIM

o Qur’an is His Speech – Kalaam Allah

o To develop a balance personality

Assalaamu Alaykum,

"She had a special love for Salah; whenever she heard that a person had died in a state of performing Sajdah or in a Masjid, she would pray that she too would pass away in such a state."
Nasreen's Family friend

The day started as a normal day for Nasreen, mother of Nabila Naz, Taleem al Qur'an 2005 student. After praying Fajr herself and waking everyone in the house to pray, she rested for some time to be energized for class. Nasreen and Nabila both came from New Jersey a week ago just to visit the Al Huda Institute, it was the love for Qur'an that brought them here.

When she arrived at the institute yesterday, as part of her daily routine, Nasreen had her breakfast in the cafeteria, not knowing that this would be her last meal. She attended the al Asma al Husna class, studying and memorizing the Names of Allah, not knowing that this would be her last class. After the class finished, she went to the masjid adjacent to the institute to pray her nafl Salah. She then spoke to her daughter, Nabila, for some time. At around 1:00pm, Nasreen was asked to have lunch, she responded by saying that she was going to go to Tafsir class, therefore would eat later on. In the mean time, a sister asked someone to write something on the white board in the cafeteria. Nasreen saw the opportunity to do good and stepped forward in offering her services and said that she would write it. And so she did, not knowing that this would be the last time she wrote.

The Masjid was where her heart belonged, Nasreen left the cafeteria and decided to pray nafl Salah before she went to class. As she entered the Masjid, she helped a sister clean the area by removing little things out of the way, not knowing that this would be her last act of kindness. She then made her way to the usual corner where she always used to pray, not knowing that this would be her last salah. It was only moments later that her soul had departed... her last deed Salah... in the Masjid.

Nasreen was here for only a week, yet she had acquainted herself with almost everyone. Her kind and gentle personality touched all those around her. Her love for Allah, her love for Salah, her love for the Qur'an, her desire to spread the Deen made her who she was - a person who had spread goodness where ever she went.

I pray to Allah that He forgives and has mercy upon the deceased and gives patience to all her loved ones. And may Allah make the journey of this life easy for us and enable us to do the work of the Deen in the best manner.

O Allah forgive her and have mercy upon her, grant her wellbeing and pardon her and receive her honorably. Expand her place of entry and bathe her with water, snow and ice and cleanse her of sin like you cleanse a white garment from dirt. Exchange her worldly home for a better home and her family for a better family and her spouse for a better spouse. Admit her into Paradise and protect her from the punishment of the grave and the torment of the Fire.

The Summer Program aims is to impart sound knowledge of the Qur'an and Sunnah and initiate character building in a rich and warm Islamic environment, so as to provide a stepping-stone for a lifetime of learning and spiritual growth.
